Tasting love in Lettele
A living scene from a wedding celebration, as a repeating, live painting, capturing the moment when a happy couple from the village of Lettele greets their guests (visitors) to receive congratulations. Each guest was offered a small treat, a taste of love in Lettele, shared by one of the happy couples from the village.
I asked the couples, "What does love taste like to you?" In this video, the wedding couples share their love for eachother and its unique flavors.
-Video-
I based the recipe for the treat on the local surroundings: a butter toffee (many dairy farms) with a touch of umami (see video) and three key flavors: bitter honey, blackberry, or strawberry. Most guests identified strawberry, though some swore they tasted apple-cinnamon—even though it wasn’t in the sweet. These flavors sparked wonderful conversations about the taste of love.
The treat was made together with volunteers from Lettele, following traditions from my grandmother’s time, when the entire village would help prepare meals for a wedding celebration.
