The Hague, a city behind the dunes in the forest, is always watching sea. A salty wind blows past the towers and though the streets. Long lanes lead to the sea. The doves are seagulls here.

Viewed on the map, the sea appears to be mere padding between stretches of land. Invisible are its fearsome depths and its all destroying power. Yet standing next to the immense sea makes one feel small. Boats as high as towers are no more than dots on the horizon. Yet in its vastness the sea holds a promise of freedom, the call of faraway lands and adventures which our ancestors once heeded.  For centuries, songs have been sung and played in honour of the sea, of the bold adventurers who dared defy her and the loved ones they left behind.

A video like a moving painting about enchantment between the sea and the accordion, an instrument often used to serenade the sea. They are alike.

Wind Orchestra

I made this installation about aeolian instruments in 2011. It formed the base for my project An ode to the sea.
In a large installation with sound and beamed film, I let the windorchestra play. Instruments built for men come to life in the wind. They play their own music.

Music: An adaptation of Bugeilio’r gwenith gwyn by John Tomas

The main inspiration for this video was this magical image with ten harps at seaside that used to hang in my harp classroom (by Salvi). My teacher told me that they were the women and children waiting and longing for their fathers and husbands at sea. I have always wondered what it would sound like. With Astrid Vroegindeweij-Broekema and her harp ensemble.

The second part of the project An ode to the sea is a series of performances being performed towards the sea, from the roof of the Royal academy of Fine Arts The Hague.
